ELTA

Goals

English Language Teaching Assistant (ELTA) program established in 2021 has been funded by the Ministry of Education.  The goal of the ELTA program is to recruit part-time quality English teaching assistants to provide a rich and diverse English learning environment for students in Taiwan’s public elementary and junior high schools.  The ultimate goal of this program is to offer Taiwanese students the opportunities to improve their English language skills and global awareness in an enriched and immersive environment by recruiting foreign ELTAs.

Roles

Thematic Lesson Teaching Assistant: Thematic lesson is given during the semester. Conversational English is emphasized and facilitated with topics/contents determined by ELTAs in collaboration with class instructors in the assigned schools.

Lesson Preparation with Teachers: ELTAs will collaborate closely with local teachers to develop effective lesson plans, utilizing their expertise and creativity to create engaging and impactful English learning experiences for the students.

English Summer/Winter Camp Leader: For the camps, ELTAs are given flexibility when determining camp themes. Possible topics range from cultural and artistic awareness to environmental and scientific explorations. In light of the available themes, specialized lexicons could be introduced to camp-goers with ease, especially when coupled with cooperative experiences as offered.

Club Activity Leader: ELTAs, as club activity leaders, are offered opportunities to run clubs such as reading club, writing club, sport club, Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) clubs etc.

English Reading Tutor: ELTAs will read English books with students who lack confidence and passion for English learning to help enhance their English abilities.

English Conversation Partner: This is an out-of-class assistance for students who demonstrate interests in English learning but might be struggling with in-class materials. ELTAs will facilitate small group conversations in a safe atmosphere so students can practice their English listening and speaking skills, and gain confidence in learning English!

English Competition Trainer: ELTAs will assist the execution of school-wide linguistic competitions by training the respective class or school contestants in pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structure, and tonality.

Others: Activities vary depending on the school’s needs and the ELTA’s strengths.

During winter or summer breaks, a standard work week, as defined by the labor law, of 40 hours a week or 8 hours per day should be observed in favor of the aforementioned 20-hour work week.

ELTAs will be offered NTD$400 per session (before tax and insurance) when working in the elementary or junior high school.
